Maternal Mental Health Advocacy Day
In March 2022, Tiara Flynn (Founder of Phenomenal Mama) volunteered to be a team lead for Maternal Mental Health Advocacy Day.
Maternal Mental Health (MMH) Advocacy Day is a full day of meetings hosted and coordinated by Shades of Blue Project, Maternal Mental Health Leadership Alliance, and 20/20 Mom. The purpose behind MMH Advocacy Day was to educate legislators about MMH issues and provide solutions that will address these issues. Throughout the day, advocates met with elected officials and staff members to ask for additional funding for established MMH programs and co-sponsorship of new legislation.
As a team leads for MMH Advocacy Day, Flynn’s job was to:
- set the stage, do team introductions
- introduce the staffer
- make critical points about the state of Maternal Mental Health in the US
- open up the floor for team members to share personal stories
- communicate the “asks.”
“Anytime there’s an opportunity to jump in and advocate for mothers and families, I’m there! Maternal Mental Health Advocacy Day was a no-brainer for me. It was well organized, and the action items were well thought out and intentional. I was grateful to the organizers/sponsors for putting this day together. It was an honor to contribute in any way I could” – Tiara Flynn.
